The following are a few thoughts on the 8GB Ipod Touch (3G).
First impressions
- The Ipod cannot do anything before it has been connected to a computer running a new version of iTunes -- that sucks, it should be possible to do everything by wifi.
- The keyboard has very small keys in horizontal mode -- too small for my large fingers. It is not possible to use a stylus.
- The large vertical keyboard is not an OS-thing, so depending on what app or screen you are on, it might not be accesible.
- There is no microphone, which make the voice recording feature pretty much useless...
- All the hardware is very nice.
Later Impressions
- I have not used itunes since the first time, it works surprisingly well without it (but then again, I do not sync music, videos etc.).
- The killer applications for me is InstaPaper? and Simplenote.
- I love it!
Applications etc.
Excellent
- Dropbox (free). Filesharing, but most important, pdf-reader.
InstaPaper
(free) is a great app to save webpages for later (on a computer) and then fetch them with a button on the ipod, to read them offline. However, the "Read Later"-bookmarklet does not work in chrome. The free edition is limited to the ten latest pages. I have bought the application (InstaPaper Pro
, 30dkk), the "killer" feature in the pro edition is the ability of the program to remember the last position in a text.- Simplenote (free), notebook with sync to server accessible from a browser
SmartGo
(18dkk), http://smartgo.com/en/smartgo.htm
Good
- Games:
DoodleJump
(6dkk), Rope'n'fly 2 (lite is free) - Google reader, wave, and calendar (mobile) works great (in the browser)
- Amazon, Imdb, Wikiamo (wikipedia) are good apps to access the references. They are all free.
- TED (free) is a good interface to TED talks and audio (but the archive interface is not impressive, it is a simple list)
- Stanza (free) is a great ebook reader with direct access to project Guthenberg. An application is necessary to insert random ebooks, I like
InstaPaper
better for the ability to insert html etc. directly from the browser.
